MANGATOTARA BLOCK.

9 SPURRING ON THE DEPARTMENT. Lengthy correspondence has taken place betwen the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Auckland Province, and the Lands Department with reference to a request for the opening to settlement of the Mangatotara Block, near Rotorua. Many months ago tbe Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey) undertook to send officers of the Department to measure the quantity of timber in the block, in order to decide whether its continued reservation for timber purposes was justified. The timber-measur-ers had not been at their work long before they were withdrawn, and the Farmers' Union has since been jogging the Prime Minister's memory concerning his promise. A letter has now come to hand from the Under-Secretary (Mr. John Strauc.hon) stating that it is intended to resume the work of measuring as soon as possible- "You may rest assured, therefore," writes Mr. Strauchon, "that tbe work will be pushed on with all possible speed when it is commenced. The block, however, cannot be dealt with until the quantity of timber thereon is definitely ascertained."
