(Received 9.15 ajn.) ■SYDNEY, this day. Owing to the quarantine restrictions in Fiji, passenger rates to tbe group have been increased by 50 and freights by 25 per cent. When seen by a "Star" representative on the matter this afternoon, the Auckland manager for the I'nion Company (Mr A. B. J. Irvine) explained that the quarantine precairtions in Fiji were so stringent that vessels from infected ports had to lie in the stream for a period of from 10 to 14 days before being granted pratique. This made such a serious increase in expense that it became necessary to make a big increase in tbe rates. The freight charges from Auckland had been increased by 25 per cent, but so far no increase had been made in passenger fares. Mr Irvine went on to say that the epidemic at Sydney and Auckland had resulted in heavy losses for his company.
