THE RAILWAYS.

WORK AT HIGH PRESSURE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) OHRJSTTH'LROH. Sunday. A prominent railway official, speaking to n reporter to-day. said that there was a tremendous pre-- nf work ill all the Government workshops at the present time. Hij flO-toii locomotives were being constructed at Addirrgton shops, which, when finished, would be sent up to the Taiiiape-Taumarunui section of the Main Trunk line. Eight 4j-to:i tank engines had also been constructed for the North, and since April Ist they had been going away at the rate of one a month. Trucks were also being made in large quantities, the sizes being 8 and 12 ton fonr-whee'ed wagons and "iO-ton bogie trucks, and thi" shuuld relieve tbe usual shortage.

Referring to the level crossing danger, the railway man stated that in all probability the department would seriously consider the erecting of automat reallyoperated warning bells at all such dangerous places, but it was doubtful if such action would 'be taken until an Act of Parliament lind been pa.sr,ed which would exonerate the Railway Department from any liability from claims for damages should accidents arise through the warning devices failing to act for any reason. It will not be long now, he continued, before passenger petrol locomotives should arrive in the Dominion. These locomotives, which, with their carriage. are all self-contained, are intended for use upon branch lines where the traffic hardly warrants the incurring of the expenses ol" running an ordinary train. On what particular lines the new type of engine will he run has not yet been decided, nnd will probably not lie known until the new general manager has in-ve-jtigated the whole matter.
