ATTEMPT AT BLACKMAIL.
Baroness Vanghan has cleverly escaped an attempt at blackmail, of which she was the object. Two men, came to toer recently and said they had -written a book, in "which she was traTestied, and to!d her that a publisher liad offered them more than £1.000 lor it. If she desired to stop the publication of the book she had only to pay them, twice that sum. The Baroness ; pretended to be greatly Interested In the matter, and asked them to come to her chateau on a certain day. The tyro men came, and one remained octside wMe the other entered. Trvo detectives -were hiddenin tbe room. Xhe man repeated his statement and read out the headings <T the chapters. WSen lie had done so the two detective came out and arrested him. 1&9 confederate Tvas afterwsrds also arrested, and both haTe been taken to Paris. The magistrate ordered them to be locked np In t2ie Saute Prison pending an inrestijration.
