COST OF METAL.

(To the Editor.) s ir.—The data upon which I based ray estimate of the cost of metal from the city quarry were twofold—first the annual statement of the accounts of the corporation for 1012. from which 1 find that the total cost of the quarry for the year ending March. 1012. was, in round numbers, £7.200: and secondly, from the monthly reports of the City Engineer, from which I gather that the output per month averages about 1.850 cubic yards. The sum is a very simple one. If 1.850 yards cost £600. then one yard will cost about 7/ : but I have it on good authority that the cost of the quarry for the year just ended in March last was greater than in the previous year. and. that being so. I do not think I over-estimated the matter by assuming that the additional cost would amount to another sixpence ppr ton. making 7/6 per cubic yard as the probable cost at the least of all the store that comes from that place, pood, bad and indifferent. If there are figures available giving the actual cost, guaranteed by the city auditor, then, why are ther not in the possession of the Council? By furnishing these figures with his monthly reports the engineer could set at rest all doubts on the matter. —I am, etc., H. K. BAGNALL.
