BIBLE-IN-SCHOOL LEAGUE.

ADDRESS BY CANON GARLAND. A meeting of those interested in the Bible in schools movement was held on Saturday afternoon in the Town Hall. The Rev. (.'. 11. (iarland (principal of the Methodist College) presided, and about 500 people were present. The organising secretary ot" the Bible m Schools League (Rev. Canon Garland), in the course of an address to the gathering, alleged that 75 per cent of the population of New Zealand was represented by the Churches forming the League, and that 41 denominations were on the other side.

f'anon Garland claimed that at the famous New Plymouth ( onference, where the teachers by six to one voted against the League, that only represented the views of the majority of the members of the Educational Institute, but was not representative of the whole of the teachers. He said he would like lo know if there was any truth in the statement that the teachers bad been supplied by their own officers with the views of Bishop Cleary and those opposed to the League, but not with those of the other side. Canon Garland said that many teachers favoured the League's propaganda, and Tead a letter supporting that statement from a teacher m the back blocks. He contended that the teacher who put the child's interests first was the truer to his profession.

Canon Cirland reminded the audience that the offer to pay. the expenses of the teachers to visit Australia to inquire into the working of the system in vogne there still held good. He 6aid he would pay tlio expenses ot Mr. T. Ii Welhi (president of tho Institute) and any other teacher selected by that gentleman, and the League would he prepared to trust the report of the two gentlemen. ('anon Oarland strongly advocated a referendum vote on the' Bible in ,schools. question.
