WHEN MILK IS SCARCE.

TWENTY PER CENT OF WATER. "A cow kicked one of the buckets over, and defendant was induced to put a little water in the milk," was the frank admission made by counsel for Alfred Aldred, of Mount Roskill, charged at the Police Court this morning, with vending milk which had too much water in it and too little fatty solids. Counsel added that since the initiation of the prosecution defendant had gone out of the milk business.

Inspector McGrath stated that the defendant had been a milk farmer in a small way, and ::old milk to retailers. "Twenty-one per cent of water is rather too strong, or, perhaps, I should say, too weak," commented Mr. Frazer, S.M. "In a case like that, when the man sells five gallons he is selling four gallons of milk and one of water at 4"d. a quart, which seems to mc to he theft, or false pretences." Defendant was fined £20 and 19/6 costs.

The shortage of the milk supply was advanced by Mr. Mowlem as the "cause for there being 13 per cent of water in a sample of milk vended by Edward Coppina. Counsel said that "the milk sold hy Coppina had frequcntlv been tested, and found up to the mark, but recently, because of the short supply, Ooppras had to get nrilk where he could, and evidently aome of the outside milk he got w«s below f3ie standard, as he, himself, had not tampered at all with it.
