AN ILLEGAL RAFFLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. In the Magistrate's Court, to-day. » case was heard against S. A. Edingef (secretary of the Hospital Bazaar) in connection with a raffle wherein the prizes included a Jersey bull, a trip to Sydney, and a section of land. A plea of "Guilty" was entwed, but counsel urged in mitigation of the offence that the money was raised for the benefit of eick and suffering people, and not for individual gain.
The magistrate said the offence W committed deliberately, in face of * solemn warning by the Minister for Internal affairs. There had been- an attempt to set the law at nought. Any device producing the effeot aimed »* came under the Gaming Act. Ii he inflicted a heavy fine it would not reacn any individual, but would be depriving sick and suffering people, hut if a nominal fine were inflicted it would encourage the offence on future occasionsDefendants were fined £2 on each char?* and costs 21/.
