FIRE AT PARNELL.
DRAPER'S SHOP GUTTED. OWNER'S HEAVY LOSS. A serious blaze occurred at 4 pun. on Saturday in Manukau Road, Parnell, when a draper's shop, owned by Mr J. Giltcour was practically gutted. The fire broke out in the showroom right in the centre of the building, and when the Parnell Fire Brigade, UDder Captain Cowan, arrived on the scene, flames were belching from both the back and the front of the building. The City brigade arrived almost immediately after, and the outbreak was confined to the shop, which was built of wood. Adams and Co.'s grocer's shop was close up on one side, and a private residence on the other, but the efforts of the brigade resulted in very little damage being done to adjoining premises. Mr Giimour's shop, however, was practically burned out. The damage to stock is estimated at £2,300, and Mr Gilmour will be a heavy loser, as the only insurance is for £1,000 in the State Office. Mr Gilmour also owns the property, which is valued at £800, and the insurance is £350 in the same office.
How the fire started is a mystery, for there was no sign of anything wrong when Mr Gilmour locked up the shop for the afternoon at 1 p.m.
