His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool, who c*me up to Auckland by special train to bid the New Zealand farewell, returned to Wellington last night by the Main Trunk express. Mr T H-arle <liles (Conciliation C om * miesioner for Auckland) has returned from Hamilton. Mr A. M. Myers, M.P., and Mrs Myers left for Wellington last evening by the Main Trunk express. Mr Ternon Reed. M.P.. is in Auckland on his way to attend the sittings of the House in Wellington. Mr and Mr* Newton, of Christchurch, leave this evening by the Maheno. While in Auckland they stayed at the Star Hotel. Mr C T. Haynes. -Chief Sanitary -Inspector at Aucklaud. will be a passenger this evening by the Maheno on a holidaytrip to Sydney. Mr A. B. J. Irvine, manager at Auckland for the Union Company, returned by the Maheno yesterday after a holiday visit to Australia.

Mr B. M. Wilson. Director of the Tourist Department, who has been travelling round with the New Zealand, left last night for Wellington. The Hon. Dr. M. Pomarc arrived at Taumarunui 0:1 Saturday evening to attend a largp gathering of Maoris, to discuss with them matters affecting native land, and will then leave for the Thames, where he i-. due tomorrow. Mr D. B. Carriek, for the last four years with Dalgety and Co.. Wellington, has been appointed manager for the firm at Maeterton, in place uf Mr Moody, -who has been transferred. Before leaving Wellington Mr Carric-k was presented with a case of pipes 'by a number of buyers. Mr R. S. Wheeler, of the Wellington Telegraph Offit-e, hae taken over the duties of wirelfcfi operator at the Auckland Station. Mr Davies. who was here formerly, 1>26 gone to the Chatham Islands, where he is acting ac officer-in-charge of the experimental wirelese etatkm. Mr J. D. Woodford, secretary of the Wellington Chess Club, and formerly of Christcnnrch. who w-a.s well known among New Zealand chess players, died in the Wellington Hospital on Saturday evening as the result oi an attack of pneumonia. He was honorary treasurer of the Ghristchurch Exhibition Chess Congress. The health of Bishop Crossley, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, has not improved. Canon Mac Murray, Viuar of St. Mary's, Parnell, had letters iius morning: stating that his lordship had been worse since the last particulars were dispatched. It is now six weeks since the Bishop was compelled to take a rest, as he was suffering from a very bad nervous breakdown. Mr Wynn Williams, caretaker at Whakarewarewa, who is in Auckland at present, retains to Rotorua to-morrow or the next day. Mr Williams is a son of a former Crown Prosecutor, who, in the old days, was widely Known as "Lawyer Wynn." It is 23 years since Mr Williams wae in Auckland, and he was astonished at the remarkable changes that have taken place in the city and suburbs. Mr S. Percy Smith, of Xew Plymouth, who is accompanied by his daughter, is visiting the Motherland, after an absence of t>3 yeare, on holiday. After a very interesting time spent in Devonshire they have come on to London, and there they remain for about a month, visiting the usual eighte and paying visits to relatives and friends, then go on to Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincoln and Edinburgh on further visits to relations. In September they hope to visit the British Association meeting at Birmingham, and after that will be in London again.

Mr K. W. Kane, who has just retired from the inspectorate of the Bank of New Zealand for health reasons, wae presented on leaving with a travelling rug and bag and a silver cigaretteholder by the officers of the bank stationed la Wellington. The presentation was made on behalf of the staff by Mr Green, the local manager, who referred to Mr Kane's long and honouraHe connection with the bank and the general regret of the staff that l*e was leaving. In replying and thanking his fellow-officer* for their gifts, Mr K-ano said that he wee influenced in his decision to retire by medical advice that a lengthy rest was required by hini.
