penalty or anscoirozrcT. SENTENCED TO SET EX DAYS. The hearing of the charges of insubordinate conduct nt Kotoroa Island againat ■Jainra Charles Dualop, George Po-pe nni George Blythe wns concluded this morning. Af..r-r remarks had been made in mitigation, and Mr Tunks i.for the Salvation Army anthoritiosi had said that, he did desire a beary penalty, the magistrate, who h?A convicted on Saturday, eaid that it had been pointed out that t'::e conduct of the nwn had bern unobjectionable up to a certain date. Then something occurred which resulted in considerable feeling, and then the men were guilty of misconduct. Some day-s had been =pent in the hearing, as an endeavour had been made to explain what had occurred, and '.vhat the ground of feeling was that led to the trouble. The fart that feeling had been arou.sed could not be a defence to the charge of in.Mrbordination. though it might be ground for mitigation. It was difficult to judge here wh.it justification there was for feeling. Hid Worship was inclined to think that for the rao-t part it was due to one or two pprsons on the island who vprc of a dissatisfied nature and prepared to see trouble eventuate. Ther<» seernr-:! to be .something more definite a-* we!! as that, but he could not say anything powsrninjj thnt. Tt seemed "to him that and Blrthf? were acting quite secondary pnrts to Dunlop. He t-housht the rase would be met if he pointed out to the inmates of tie institution that discipline was absolutely necessary, and. pven if they had grievances, the conduct complained of could not be justified. Orievanre? must be laid in a proper way before the proper authorities. Offence's of the kind charged must be punished, otherwise discipline could not be maintuned. T.h<rr were, however, reason* for making the punistwment in this case light. One w*s that the men bad already ha-d a term of 14 days in Mt. Eden prison. Pope and Blyihe pi3red only secondary parts to Dunlop, but the" Litter's healfh was not good, as he was in a highly nerv-iiif. uncontrolled state, which was probably the cause of the whole trouble. His V.'orship diil not care to tnve Dunlop n long term of imprisonment, and. therefore, ""all three men would be sentence.! to seven divs' hard ]-xhnur
