He joined the Department in 1891, the year of its foundation, and became secretary on Mr Tregear's retirement two years og-o.
SUDDEN* DEATHS. DUNEDIX, this day. Eric Walker, aged two years, dieo. suddenly yesterday at his parents' residence. St» Kilda. Ada Baxter, a girl, died in Mrs. Eadv'e house, near Mount Cargill. As medical men were unable to give certificates as to the cause of death, inquests will be held in both cases.
MISCELLANEOUS. FEIL-DIXO, this day. A dwelling house in Derby Street, occupied by Mrs. W. Mends, Vfne destrayed by fire at midnight on Sunday. ' OHRISTCHURC-H, this day. At the inqnest on Ellen Baallie, a married woman, aged 60, a verdiot of death from lieart disease was returned. John Benjamin Bush, aged 45, died in h-ospital yesterday, from a fractured sknll, the result of a fall. At the inquest evidence was given that he was subject to epileptic fits. The steamer Petone, which broke her shaft ofT Timaro, is being towed to I/yttelton by the Breeze, and will be docked there. TAIHAPE, this day. A fire which occurred at midnight on Saturday destroyed a 'three-roomed cottage at Taihape, owned by A. Nathan, the tenant .T. Stewart. There is an insurance on the Imilding of £30 in the Sun office, and on the furniture of £00 in the Commercial I'nion. GISBORNE, this day. Harold Douglas Lockhart, who had ransacked a house and stolen 15/ from a drawer, pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence.
