LIBERAL WHIPS OPERATIONS
SHARES FOR THE PARTY.
MASTER OF EUBANK'S ABSENCE. ' (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, June ft. At the sitting of the Marconi committee to-day the chairman (Sir Edgar Speyer) announced that though pressed in April to return and give evidence, the Master of Elibank cabled that he was not able to attend before July.
Mr Salaman testified that an account appeared in Fenner and Co.'s ledger in the names of the Master of Elibank and Mr Percy Illingworth (now Chief Liberal Whip) jointly, but the account was not connected with Marconis. Witness believed that the Master of Elibank's trust account and other accounts in his name were one and the same.
The trust account did not record Marconi deals but the other did. The Master of Elibank was a creditor to the extent of £30.000 in Fenner's estate. Mr Illingworth testified that the Master of Elibank'.i brother told him that the former Whip purchased 3.000 American Marconis for the Liberal party. When witness assumed the Whipship the Master of Elibank handed over to him the party'" securities, but they did not include Marconi shares. The Master of Elibank is to visit Ecuador for the purpose of negotiating certain oil contracts for the firm 'of Messrs Pearson.
