EDEN TERRACE AND THE CITY
CROWN COMMISSION'S BEPOBT TIME RIPE FOR AMALGAMATION. A POLL TO BE TAKEN. The report of the Commissioners Messrs. U. M. Skeat and B. J. Eaam), appointed to take evidence and inquire into the petition favouring the amalgamation of the Eden Terrace district with the City of Auckland, have completed their investigations, and forwarded their report to his Excellency the Governor as follows:—" In pursuance of a warrant under your hand, dated the twelfth April, 1913, appointing us a commission under the powers of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1910, to hold an inquiry and make a report as to the suitability for municipal control of the area comprised in the Eden Terrace Road District, County of Eden, a petition for the inclusion of which in the City of Auckland was presented to your Excellency by tire- ratepayers of the said district, and to make such alterations in the boundaries of the area proposed to be included us we 3hall»dcem necessary and advisable, we have now the honour to report:—
"The Road District is a very small one. wedged in between the boroughs of Mount Eden and Mount Albert and the city of Auckland. The total rating value of the Road District is about £258,000, population 3,000; revenue about £3,216. We think the usefulness of Road Board control has passed, and that the time has now arrived for municipal control so as to give better opportunities for dealing with such a closely populated area near Auckland. After'careful inspection of the district, and judging from the necessity for improvement required on bhe main and all of the side roads, together with the other requirements of a congested area, and the limited control of a small Road Board between much more progressive boroughs, we consider it would be better for all parties concerned that the, .-.present Ed-en Terrace Road Districts should be included in the city of Auckland."
A p»Il will now require to be taken, and the clerk of the Eden Terrace. Road Board has been requested, after consultation with the petitioners, to suggest the name of a suitable person to prepare the roll in connection with the poll.
