DAVIS CUP.

A WIN FOR AMERICA, IN PRELIMINARY TIE. EXCITING FESTAL GAME.

(By CaMe.—Press Association.—Copyright) (Received 9.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 9. The preliminary tie in the Davie Cup contests between Australasia and America resulted, as was generally anticipated, in a win for America. .

Oh Friday the Americans won both their singles, while on Saturday they were defeated in the doubles. Tbe remaining singles were set down for to-day, and MeLoughlan. defeating Doust in three sets straight, gave the Americans the match with three wins out

of four. In the fifth game Williams beat Puce. the Americans thus finishing up with four wins out of five games. Th<> score in the Williams-Eicc game was I-β, 4—6, o—l. 9—7. 6—2, the points scored being: Williams 156. Rice 145. Like Doust. Rice kept the ball low, preventing smashing tactics. He held the American in the first two sets, but in the third set Williams managed, by desperate smashes, to start a winning streak. He took the fourth after an exciting see-saw game, and finished a match of sensations by winning the fifth.

The severity of MeLoughlin's service and returns caused the downfall of Doust, who was unable to handle the ball propelled at MeLoughlin's terrfic speed.

Doust's best asset was a slow low ball, hardly rising six inches above the top of the net, which mass it aiflicnlt for McLoughlin to use the overhand smash.

The Australian took his defeat in a sportsmanlike manner, and after shaking McLoughlin's hand, seized the umpire's megaphone and proposed that the crowd join him in three cheers for the American team. These were given with a will, and cheers for the Australians followed. WILDING AGAIN DEFEATED. (Received 12.15 p.m.) PARIS, Juno 9. In the international hard court championship to-day Froitzhcim (Germany) defeated Wildinp; (Sew Zealand), B—o, -2—U, o—2, 6—4.
