A MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT.

CAB DBXVES YIP TO HOSPITAL

AND DELIVERS AN UNCONSCIOUS MAN.

SUPPOSED TO HAVE GOT BETWEEI TRAM AND MOTOR CAR. . A casualty case was admitted to the Auckland Hospital last night, which seems to be surrounded by a good deal of mystery. The name ol the victim of the accident, for such it appears to have been, is George Dale, a married man, employed as a cooper at the Great Northern Brewery. Dale lives at Ellerslie, and presumably came to town last evening to see the illuminations. Somewhere in the vicinity of 0 o'clock he must have been standing or walkina on the tramline in Customs Street, the Thames Hotel, for at U. 30 a cab drove up to the hospital with Dale's unconscious form inside, the only explanation which the cabby could give th.it his passenger had been p_ced in the civ by someone, who said lie had beer, knocked down by a tramcar. The .s.imantan paid the cabman's fare, and directed him to take the unconscious man to the hospital, where he still lies in an unconscious state. According to a bystander';, story, Dale in some way got between a tramcar and a motor-ear, by one of winch he was knocked down, though neither driver seemed to notice the accident, both vehicles continuing or. their course. There were a good many, people about at tin- time, bat no one apparently thought of notifying a policeman or of seeking medical aid, the general opinion of those win n.nv the man lying in the roadway being that he was dead. At all events he was picked up for dead, a cab hurriedly sum- : _oned, and the unfortunate man placed inside, the driver being inst rooted by the one who had paid the fare to set' I off in all haste for the hospital. This instruction the cabby carried out, the. hospital authorities repotting tint tbeunconscious man was received at li.i'li, suffering from concussion of the brain. The strange part about the whois affair is that up tili this aftcrnoor neither the tramways authorities nor , the police had received any notification c of the accident. The hospital author-" ties were informed that the man was knocked down by a car. and as ths"r | interest is more concerned with repair-.-ing injuries than in discovering how iney. happened, their inquiries went no fur- > ther. It is understood that Dale's hurt is confined to the concussion, and although he is still unconscious, no sen- ~ ous fears are entertained regarding his | reeoverv.
