LIQUOR AND THE STATE.
AUSTRA___'S INCREASE. (Received 10.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The "Herald," commenting on the drink bill, says that very few people not directly benefiting from the "trade" can view the very large increase in expenditure on drink without regret. The lamentable fact remains that Labour, put in to work reform, has not apparently affected either the drinking habits of the people or the steadily increasing revenue from the sale of liquor, in which every person, including the most vigorous opponents of the trade, shares. The "Herald" advocates as tbe best remedy for checking the growth of the traffic the elimination of the factor Of private profit.
