WAIPOUA STATE FOREST.

DARGAVILLE. this day. Evidence was given before the Forestry Commission at Dargaville yesterday recommending that all millable timber in the Waipoua State iorest should be sold and tha-t the area be thrown open for closer settlement. A sawmiller gave evidence regarding white pine, and protested against any further 'bar to its exportation. 'He contended that as white pine grew on the rich alluvial flats, the conversion of the trees into marketable timber made large areas of dairying country available for settlement. To-day Dr L. Cockayne and Mr T. W. Adam's will visit W,hangarei via Tangiteroria, and the rest of the party will go by rail to Kaihu, whence a visit of inspection will be paid to the Waipoua forest. Tomorrow the party wall go on to Opononi and Ko-liukohu, and at the latter place they will inspect the Takahue State forest of some 10,000 acres. The commission will probably visit Kaitaia, and the two contingents will meet again at Wha.-nga.rei, arriving back in Auckland on April 22.
