FOUND DROWNED.
All inquest was held at the Coroner'i J Court this morning by Mr. T. Greshaiu, '" to ascertain the facts'connected wit_'t_«;fl death of Herman Ludwig . Halbersei),'* _ whose body was found in the. harbour yes; M terday. Sergeant Bowman represented • the police. Dr. James Moir the age of deceased at 34 years. Nielsen identified .the body as | that of a man he had known for about ■ .v| eleven years. Deceased was not married. % He last saw Halbersen on Friday after- | noon about 3 o'clock in Lower Queen | Street, with some of his mates, on the' j■) scow Moa. Deceased was then the worse | for liquor. He was a native of Norway, | and had no relatives in New Zealand. . Charles Thomas Greydoii, who found J the body, said he had "occasionally sccri, | Halersen in the vicinity of Ooldio's mill. | When he s_\v him generally, the man had <| a few drinks in him. . ■•.'*'?. J Mr. Gresham mentioned that it was a%| case similar to the present one, that en-' | abled him to get payment for witnesses. ,| Formerly if a man saw a body, secured "■'■,. it, and informed the police, his reward ffi was to lose half a day's pay to attend tho jf inquest. Now he was p_id six shillings. The jury returned a verdict that death . was due to drowning, but there, wits no || evidence to show by what means he canie W into the water.
