OTIRA TUNNEL.
■AIiABMIST RUMOURS ANSWERED.. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) "WELLINGTON , , this day. iDisqnieting statements about water aifficulties in the Otira Tunnel have been published; in'.tM South Island. It has •been suggested, among other things, that at the BeaJey end so much water has ibeen entering the .tunnel thct the pumps could not "control it,' and excavatings from-that end have had to stop. A general slackening of the pace was also alleged. To all these statements the Public Works engineers give a flat denial. A good deal 6-f surface water wot in during a rainstorm recently, but it did not overwhelm the pumps, nor is •there any indication of trouble of that ikirid There has been no change in the position, except that instead of slowing dowri, the department is taking on every capable workman it can get, and there are still places open.
