HARBOUR BOARD ELECTIONS.

I ' j CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS. fJONI-SIS FOR SEA/EN SEATS ONLY. FOUR MEMBERS ELECTED UNOPPOSED. WHO REPRESENTS MANUKAU? Nominations closed at noon to-day for most of the seats on the Auckland Harbour Board, the exceptions being in the case of the two seats to which the payers of duos on ships are entitled, and the one seat to which the payers of dues on goods elect their representative. For tihe three seats to Avhich the city and tlie borough of Grey Lynn return their representatives, four nominations have been received —namely, Messis. J. H. Gunsoii. A. J. Entriean. J. 11. Bradney, and E. t'anham. The boroughs of Onehunga artel Newmarket are entitled to return one member, and lor the seat there are two candidates nominated —Messrs. C. Baglcy and A. S. Flolmes. Four candidates were expected to contest the nevonport-Birkenhead-North-cotc seat on the Board, jo which Mr. A. Kcyes decided not to seek re-election. Nominations closed at no'm to-day, however, and the only nominations received Avere bhovtc of Messrs. E. G. R. Ford and G. 11. Hutchinson. In tlie representiition of the ManukanFranklin district a peculiar position exists. The outgoing member. Mr. J. E. Taylor, contends that his election was for a period of three years, and that no contest can in the meantime take place for his seat. He accordingly lias refused to again nominate for the seat, and at noon to-day the only nomination in the hands of the returning officer was that of Mr. H. Mackenzie, of Mangere. When the Board next meets, therefore, Messrs. Taylor and Mackenzie will both appear at the meeting, and future developments are likely to be interesting. The Harbour Board, supported by the opinion of the Crown Law Office, asserted that an election was necessary, in view of Pukekohe having been created the principal authority of the district, and where a borough* is the principal authority the seat is only tenable for two years. For the two seats allocated to the representatives of payers of dues, Messrs. E. W. Alison, H. D. Heather, and PMcEhvain are candidates. So far Mr. P. Virtue is the only candidate nominated for a seat on the Board as representative of the payers of dues on goods. "Mr. Alison's nomination paper was handed in this morning, and bore the signatures of Messrs. G. Niccol. T. Henderson, C. Bailey, jun., T. Bryant. W. H. Brown, and A. J. dagger. The nominator! of all the other candidates have already been published. Members of tlie Board to-day declared to be elected unopposed included Mr. 3". Bond (representing the county of Raglan and the borough of Hamilton), Mr. John Fisher (representing the county of Waipa and borough of Cambridge), and" Mr. W. E. Hutchison (representing the borough of Mt. Eden and surrounding districts). The Government has so far not stated the name of its nominee on the Board, but it is regarded as certain that Mr. Graves Aiekin will receive the appointment. '
