THE GOLDFIELDS.

OLD HAUR'AKT. The manager telegraphed this morning:—"Thirty pounds of picked stone from the north block,' 400 ft level." BONANZA. The manager wired yesterday afternoon:—"Cut a six-inch leader in the Bonanza showing good minerals; no gold visible." In his weekly report the manager states that the north-east drive is in 127 ft, and quartz was struck on the right-hand side of the drive at a long angle. The country is very favourable for gold. The report on the operations carried out in the miue during the four-weekly period ended 15th Feb., states:—No. 9 level, Royal lode: Stoping is proceeding on the shrinkage method in the blocks east aud west of Frog i'ass, also of Nile Pass, and in the block west of Adder Pass. Empire lode: Sloping Is proceeding between Rolker ami Paul passes at 55ft up, and between Ellis and Power passes at 100 ft up. Edward lode: Stoping is proceeding between Eel and Perch pusses at 37ft up, and between 1 erch and Trout passes at 41ft up. Xhe .bole south-east crosscut has been connected with the level on the Iloyal lode. Boyal lode, west of Sole south-east crosscut: Driving west on the course of the lode has been done for 25ft, and at this point the quartz Is Ift wide. At 10ft the reef is 2ft wide, worth £1 15/1 per ton, and at -20ft om wide, worth £1 5/3 pel- ton. Prospecting for a possible continuation of Edward lode south of the Koyal lode will immediately be comineueed at 635 ft south of Perch crosscut, and "this will prove conclusively If by any chance the Edward lode will be found going south of the Koyal lode.. At No. 8 level stoping Is in. progress on the Edward and Welcome lodes. At the centre section, the level west of the rung crosscut is in ore. ■ Stoping is proceeding between the Daisy and Thistle passes also on the Empire, Alexandra, and "Martha lodes. In the centre section between Lion and Trembath crosscuts, winning ore o> the caving method has so far been very successful, and a large dally tonnage is being produced. The Royal lode at. No. o level east of the Adder crosscut, lias been advanced to 146* ft. The reef has narrowed to 181u In width. The folio wing •??$%& were obtained: At 108 ft, lode 4|ft wide, worth £1 15/11 per ton, and at 118 ft, 3ft wide, worth £1 5/5 per ton. No 2 shaft: The water has drained helow the bottom of this shaft, and sinking will be resumed In the course of a few days. No. 5 shaft: The water at this date has been reduced to a point 130 ft below No. 9 level. AVAIHI AVARDEN'S COURT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ■WAIHI, this day. The following applications made in the Warden's Court have been" consented, to by the Minister for Mines and granted:—M. J. Houlihan, for six months' protection for Totafa special quartz claim, as from March 4 1913; AVafhl Company, for six months' protection for AValhi Standard, AVaibi Gladstone, two special sites, -dam, -water race, machine siteSi and road, as from March 4,. 1913. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Occidental. —In the third slope over the low level the reef shows a little gold. Above the No. 5 level a sixth stdpe has been started from the break, which is directly above tlie winze. The first breaking down yielded 201b of picked stone, and both reef and country look favourable for more picked'stone being; got. From the north end of the stope, and about 30£t above No. 5 level 15ft have been driven southward; on the Occidental reef, which Is about 6in wide. Although the reef carries very little other mineral, a few dabs of gold were seeu when breaking down.. In the flinty crosscut at No. 4 level the country is still rather hard, with white stringers run-' iiing through.it." i-- % '--■ - ' , ■~'.'> New Sylvia.—The drive is 94ft south of the rise. The reef is sft wide, and looks well. Another 30ft of driving should bring the drive right over the rise from No. 3 level. This rise is now up 90ft, with quartz the full width. The reef has altered its underlie, and is now lying fairly flat, and carries nice minerals. The leading stope is over the old face of the drive. There is nice quartz In the back of the leading stope. Five stopes are going, and from the main drive, ore of good value is being won. About 251b of picked stone has been selected during the week. At the intermediate level two stopes have been in progress, with sft of heavily mineralised quartz in each. At the battery level there are 3ift of quartz showing. Good progress has been made with the drive at the low level. Several small breaks have been passed through, but the country is now. much iirmer. .*.:.. ... Hauraki Reefs.—ln the drive on the Golconda reef, No. 4 level, a few feet of disturbed country was passed through, but thereef is again well defined, and a little picked, stone was got. At the old No. 2-level the, reef looks well and produced a little picked stone during the week. - Connection has been ijmde .with the drive coming out under the face'from off the main stopes. This was done by means of a rise, and during theweek a few pieces of picked stone were got. Stoping off this rise should produce good results. In the drive going west, the reef looks favourable, and from the main stope a little crushing dirt showing gold has been saved. New Success.—The main level crosscut is in 277 ft. The country shows further improvement. Nice bands of mineral can be seen in the face. The other lead should.be close at haud. North Prince of ' Wales Consolidated.— The SSI south level has neon extended 9ft making total from shaft 31ft in. hard sandstone country. - The main back" Is now halfway up the face of the drive. It carries on an average Sin of quartz, and the past few days a. few fine colours of gold have been seen, the quartz being saved for crushing, although as yet it is of little value. Bremner's Freehold.—The leader recently dlscovered in the hanging wall of Tiernau's reef showed only a few colours of gold when broken down. May Queen.—As No. 10 level (1,000 ft) nearly all the places have been prospected where gold was found when driving north on the Exchange reef. This has been done by taking a leading stope 20 to 30ft iv length, but only a little gold was seeu from time to time. A trial crushing of the ore is now in the hopper, and the stope his been discontinued for the present. Drivln™ is proceeding on the Exchange reef in a southerly direction, and the quartz still looks promising, while the country is of the best description. Ross Goldflelds.—The sixth level, Caeslus dr^ c ;, is . i , ll lP ft ' The ground still requires a little blasting, and the values are lower Boreholes are now being put. in ahead of tlie drive. The sluice boxes cleaned uo for Ooz 19dwt lSgr for 140 ft of driving, which shows the ground to have been of lower values. Good progress Is being made with installing the Diesel stand-by plant •Moupwai.—The reef north at No. 2 level is very hard quartz, bnt is improvln™ lv appearance and value. The average assiiv is £1 0/1 per ton. In the crosscut at No 4 level quartz stringers are being met with, but nothing of value. The country is good! The manager reports that In the course of a few days he. will be in a position to produce a good supply of ore from the open cut on the surface. A hopper is being erected at the mouth of No. 2 level, which will be- connected by tram with the open, cut. AA'aitangi.—About-7ft of the main leader at the Intermediate level were broken down on Saturday. The leader averaged 10 to 12 inches In width, and showed dabs of free gold and telluride for the whole distance. As wired, 101b of picked stone were secured. The hnngingwall leader has junctioned with the main onep and both now form one body. AA-'ntchman.—Tiie work of cutting through the reef to intersect the footwall is in hand At present there are 10ft of quartz exposed, and to all appearance the footwall has been met with. The deviation tunnel is in GOft. through hard country. In the Sunbeam tunnel the country Is also hard. Kuranui. — The Magazine level is penetrating favourable country. The surface drive is in 53ft. During the week a sninli leader of kindly looking quartz was nassed i through. ' , i Walotahi.—Very little progress has been I made with the boring, owing to the core I .which is mostly quartz, breaking up. A new i tool has been made, with which it is honed to make better progress. , Dominion.—The deviation drive at th* low level is now in 37ft The country is I _m hard, there are mwe bLu •»c_rt!tß_ts.._ v better progresa is niad*. -
