WEI..LIXGTON, this day. When harbour board elections wero first taken under the new Act last year complaints about the expense of pre-i (paring rolls for the new combined districts were fairly numerous, and. at any. rate in the case of the Wellington Board, were very strong, for its election expenses rau into over £1,000. For the coming elections the Marine Department has framed modified •which will, it is hoped, save a good deal of expense. Where eonrbined districts return one member to the harbour board the new regulations provide that not less than 21 days' notice of the forthcoming election must be given to the returning officer, and nominations mtist 'be made at least 14 days prior to the date of election. The object of this long notice is to save 'the cost of preparing rolls if the election is not contested. Formerly the time was so short Ibetween nomination and poll that the roll had to 'be ready. Xow 'there is time to make it up after .the nomination if this is necessary. It is expected that in a large number of districts the cost of special rolls will be altogether avoided. Probahly the same improvement in the conditions wiH in due course he made in respect of large single boroughs which Tetiirn members on their own account.-
