ME. G. W. RUSSELL DISAPPROVES,

The selection of Dr. Maguire as medical superintendent cf the Auckland Hospital was ratified by the Hospital Board last night. The selection was Jsxt with an independent committee, coaswtino- of the Prime Minister (the Hon. W° F Massey), the Minister for Hospitals (the Hon. K. H. Rhodes), and tlia late Minister for Hospitals (Mr. &. \V. Russell). , ~ The Premier, in advising the selection of Dr- Macmre, remarked that the numerous applicants were professionally well qualified, but that many of them were lacking in experience necessary for the management of suck a large mstiU Mr. RusseU wrote advising the Board that he had opposed the appointment of Dr. Maguire, because the Board had already had hie name before it, and for the further reason that in view of the recent history of the hospital, he beliereo. an entirely new medfcal superintendent was desirable. He made it quite clear that he had no objection to Dr. Maguira on personal or professional gronnds. In notifying Dr. Maguire of his appointment, the chairman of the Board (Mr. H. Schofield) congratulated him upon having been placed in charge o£ the largest hospital in the Dominion. Dr. Maguire, in reply, assured the Board that he would give his best services both to the hospital and. to tae Board. (Applause.) An amount of £11 17/6 was passed in payment of Mr..Russell's expenses, he having been called from Taupo to W elliiMon for purposes of the selection.
