BREACH OF GAMBLTSG ACT. ~... . (By Correspondent) PEILDING, this day. A peculiar case was, decided by Mr ■'■j. W. Poynton.-S.M.;, at the Court this morning. Two secretariesof the recent garden fete held in aid of the funds of the Beautifying Society : "were proceeded against for . breaches; of the Gambling Act in instituting a free trip to Rotoruk: disposed, of by .the drawing of tickets of admission to the fete. --A.plea of, guilty was entered. .. - . .... . '. "- It- ;was. pointed out by defendants' solicitor that the men' derived no ■ personal gain, and that, the same .tiling was practised in other : places. , '■- The magistrate'said he' quite asoepteil the statement that.there vas vo gain, and that the men "acted quireinnc»cently; but a ; breach of the Act had been committed, and the police-had a "right "to bring the case. A fine of 10/ with 7/ i costs .was imposed in.each case;.., ;.-.
