THE SOUTHLAND FLOODS.

DAMAGE GREATER THAN EXPECTED. RIVER CHANGING.ITS COURSE. (By Telesrapn.—Press. Association.) GORE, this day. Bright sunshine prevailed this morning, and the work of restoration of 'business premises and houses after the flood damage is proceeding apace. Auction sales are proceeding outside many of the shops. The river has fallen materially. The losses of certain grain stores are much heavier than was expected, the damage being mostly confined to grass and clover seed, which are absolutely ruined. One firm lost nearly £100 worth of these seeds alone, and has discarded the seed, which is sprouting. Some apprehension is felt at Lumsden regarding the River Oreti, which appears to have formed-a new-channel behind Crosbie's and MacPherson's hotels. It is feared another big flood may cause the stream to divert further towards the eaat, when it would enter the main street of the town and affect practically the whole business portion. RAILWAY TRAFFIC RESUMED. ASHBURTON, this day. The Railway Department notifies, that traffic for south of Ealing and for north of Rangitata will be accepted as usual.
