JOINING THE CITY.

ARCH HU— BOARD'S LAST ■ MEETING. I t AFTER FORTY YEARS' EXISTENCE. _ The Arch Hill Road Board, which lias j been in existence since IS73—just forty ] years, held its final meeting last night, j sis to-day the Arcfli Hill Road District c is absorbed into the City of Auckland. _ The chairman, Mr. P. J. Hawkins, pre- j sided, und the other members present t were: Messrs. J. Ewan, A. Jenkin, J. t X. C. Somervell, and C. B. Wheeler. \ The business of the meeting took a , comparatively short time, as the only < course open was to refer the various correspondents to the City Council for the settlement of the matters in hand. At the close of the meeting Mr. Ewan remarked that personally he had had a good deal to do with the movement for Joining the city, and in his opinion it was the best thing Arch Hill had „ne yet. He said this after sitting on the Board for four years, and as a resident of thirty years' stauding. The change was an excellent thing for the district, and he wondered why the other little suburban boards still stayed out. He was pleased that the change had been made without any opposition, and was content to leave the affairs of the district in the hands of the City Council. It j was gratifying to know that the latter had promised that the Board's em-

ployecs should not suffer by the change. The chairman said he quite agreed that the change was the best thing possible. It was better to belong to one big body than to struggle along independently. He was sure <Fha-t the new City Council, if it were anything like the" old, would do its best for Arch Hill. The following motion w*is then carried, on the motion of Mr. Ewan, seconded by the chairman: —"That this Board wishes to place on record its ap-u-eciation of the faithful services ren«red to the Board by the clerk, Mr. lranklin; the foreman, Mr. Cordon; his nsistant, Mr. Lawrence, and its registiir. Mr. Skeen. during the period in wSch they have been in the Board's servio. The Board also places on record its appreciation of the Arch Hill Fire Bri_ule, for Hie very valuable services rendered by them to the district. The Boar! is of opinion that they have themselves to be very efficient by the pbmpt attention to alarms, and the rapid sssembling at fires both in our own district and also in our neighbouring districtof Grey Lynn."

In rejv to a question. Mr. Franklin said tha" foe 3iad been collector to the Board fo. twenty-three years, secretary for twent-two, and treasurer for twenty. Mr. S;een, who was always present, said that lr, ihad been present at one of the first m-etings of the Board, in the early sevenics, and had determined to be present a, the last.
