j Steady projrress is being made with the construction of the various sewers connected wilh the city drainage scheme. Thr main sewer has been completed as far as Stanley Street, and the tunnelling between that point and Cox's Creek, in which two contractors are engaged, has been completed, and the workmen are now lining the tunnel with concrete. This portion should be finished by the end of ttie year. From beyond Cox's Creek to Motion's Greek a considerable portion of the tunnelling work has aiso been completed. The Romuera 'branch .sewer has been constructed, and the >?o. 2 branch, which runs alongside Portland road, and drains a portion of Remuera. is nearing completion. The other branches tapping Newmarket, Ponsonby, One-tree Hill, and the portion that reaches from Stanler Street to Jermyn Street are also being j installed. Work has yet to be commenced on the branch that will serve Mount Eden and Mount Albert. A remarkable engineering feat was aecompiiehed recently at a factory in Pennjsylvania, when a steel roof weighing ; j 600 tons was lifted from one of the I mills to a height of 40 feet above the I perpendicular aides of the mill, 35 feet j high. This was done in less than ' J four hours.
