BAN-KRUPTCY AFTER BREACH OF

PROMISE.

A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Joel Deeble, was held. yeaterday afternoon in" the Official Assignee's office. Mr. Fisher presided.

Mr. E. Mah-ony represented the petitioning creditor, and Mr. Maesey appeared for the debtor. Xo creditors attended in person.

The Assignee said that as. there were not three creditors present, it was not a properly constituted meeting. The debtor could, however, be examined, but no resolution could be adopted.

In answer to questions 'by Mr. Aiahony, the debtor said he could not state what price he paid for 500 Bonanza shares. They were the first £nd only mining shares he ever owned?* and would also be the last. He wae only getting small wages at the time, and the calls on the 500 Bonanzas absorbed all his capital. He forfeited the shares about two months ago. He only filed his defence •to his breach of promise case on the day before it came on. His brother paid for the defence, and was one of the creditors in the estate. He coald not explain why his brother should have fought the case to save debtor, who had nothing to lose. There was no family arrangement about it. He could not explain why, when writing to his lady love, he used the plural in referring to '" our property," and " our .positions." Debtor was still unmarried. During the past two years and eight months he had not been able to pay the young lady anything, even towards the costs in ithe case. He was now livifcg at Rolleston Street, Thames. The business was carried on under the style of W. Deeble and Sons, Ltd. His father and two brothers were the shareholders as far as he was aware. Debtor stated he Qiad no interest whatever in the buame3S.
