AUSTRALIAN BUTTER.
GRADING SYSTEM WANTED. (Received 11.20 am.) 3 MELBOURNE, this day. j Sir Geo. H. Reid's report on the Aus- . tralian butter trade in England tabled > in the House of Representatives shows r that the conditions are very unsatisfacf tory, and that unless unscrupulous prac- , tices which are universally followed are f checked, the result will be permanent , injury. A large quantity of Australian butter is used to rescue, at a big profit, inferior stuff manufactured in Britain. Fifty per cent or more of the import is used for blending purposes, and the balance disposed of under names approved by salesmen. The report urges the necessity for a sound system of grading and marking similar to that of New Zealand and other countries. While other butters are well known, he did not believe that 20 per cent of the people in Britain were , aware that Australian butter was on the ' r market.
