AT ________ BEACH BATHS. NEW SYSTEM TO OPERATE. Recently, at the opening of *__c municipal .baths at Shelly Beach, the president ' of ibhe Ponaonby Swimming Club (Mi T. W. Ley.) suggested that aH foo_h se____t on the question of mixed bathing should be done away with, and that at regular intervals the baths should be thrown open to families for use under sim-Bar condition- to thcee obtaining at Napier, and in many cities ' in the Old Co_n.ry. Since then the system has been 9ucce__fully inaugurated in Ch-rist-hurch. At a meeting of the Works Committee of tie Auckland City Council, it was yesterday decided that so soon as the holidays are over, the Shelly Beach baths should be open at certain fixed hours for family bathing. The Mayor (Mr C. J. P__r) in commenting on the fact, said it was pleasing to note by an article in yesterday-. "Star" •that in C-risrtclruroh the scheme had been so suceesrsfuUy inaugurated. There was no reason why it should not be just as successfully introduced here. Strict regulations would have to be observed. No spectator would be allowed in the baths, and no one would be admitted unless accompanied by a member of the opposite sex. The bath officials would see that 'there was every regard for propriety, and the following regulations had •been decided upon:—----(1) The tratha shall be open for the purpose of family bathing at such thne. as the Council may from t'rme to time determine. (2) The bath shall be cleared of general bathers half an hour before family •bathing commences. (3) Bathers .shall emter and leave the baths only on that side of the bathe on which their dressing rooms are placed. (4) All batherß shall wear the regulation neck-to-Knee bathing costume, with the addition of trunks, to be worn over the costume, in the case of males. (5) During the time bathing is in progress, no visitors or spectators shall be allowed, and ail bathers who have completed their dr_„ng shall leave the building. (6) All persons ad-milted must be accompanied by a me_lber of the opposite sex. (7) No per_o_ under 18 yeans of age shall be allowed to enter the baths unless accompanied by an adult of the opposite sex. (8) The left side of the baths shall be reserved for males and the right side for female-. (9) No racing or fast swimming shall be allowed. The system will probably be inaugurated early in January.
