OX THE TRACKS AT ELLEBSI—E. ("*UF HOUSES AT WOKE". When daylight broke this morning, thick] misty rain was falling, and matters looked the reverse of promising for training operations at Ellerslie, bnt gradually the wind < got up and the sky cleared, the work being j got through without any inconvenience. The : course proper outside the trestles was open, and the bulk of the work was registered there, although the tan, sand, and middle i grass were also In ase. The work on the various tracks was as follows:— COURSE PROPER. H. Cutts was first to use the course proper, the Cup horse Masterpiece and Brown Owl trotting around, and then galloping around, being joined by Glen_unan over the last mile. Masterpiece, which finished well, and Glenflnnan finished together, with Brown Owl a couple of lengths away. The half-mile took 575, the six furlongs 1.26, the last mile 1.54 3-5, and the round 2.8 3-5. Jack Delaval alone spurted four furlongs attractively In 52 2-os. Tangiwai was going easier than Hetherbrae at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. Some Interest was occasioned when Walorewa and Bleriot trotted up to the si_-£ur-long post and Jumped off from a stand. At the four-furlong post Lady Gladstone joined In and led the pair home, Waiorewa finishing better than Bleriot and running the journey in 1.22. The stable companions Devastation and I Lady Elgiva were associated in a four-fur- j long spurt, which they traversed in 52 4 ss, with the former having a shade the best of It. llonoline alone ran six furlongs from a stand In 1.25. There was very little between "Kightwatch and Winning Way at the end of six furlongs, the last five of which took 1.7. The two-year-olds Lady Alicia and Soultiko_ finished on terms at the end of five furlougs run In 1.8, another of the same age In I Merry Roe doing three-quarter pace work. The Cup candidates. La Reina ou the ouislde and Vice-Admiral on the inside, after trotting a round, galloped a round. Tiie, hali-mile was left behind In 575, the six furlongs in 1.25 4-5, the round taking 2 7 4-5. Both had light boys on their backs, and La Reina pleased most. A trio of Southerners, ia Mowbray, Peg, and Martel. sprinted five furlongs from the new post in 1.7, the two former pleasing most. I Solta_o alone covered six furlongs, the last five taking 1.8 3-5. Ventura and Jason were companions in a gallop over six the former being under a strong pull to keep -with -the two-year-old, the Jonrneg- taking 1.23. Antip-hone and Phosphorus finished together several lengths In front of Virtue at the end of six furlongs, which they ran in 1.21 1-5, Virtue taking L 24 3-5. F. Loonib tent his pair. Monorail and Sea Pink, a mile and a-half, the last mile and a-quarter being covered by Monorail in 2.20 2-5, Sea Pink taking 2.23- The half- | mile took 5Ze, the sis furlongs 1.23 4-5, an-d j the first round 2.6. | Ambergris jumped off at the mile post, j being joined by Condamlne at the stx-fur-I long peg, the latter finishing well in front. running the three-quarters of a mile ln I__ 2-5, Ambergris taking two seconds longer. There was only heads separating Emma and Silverlyte at the end of si_ furlongs, run in 1.20. Pea Rifle alone spurted from the mile to the mile and a-half posts, running the five furlongs iv 1.7 3-5. Reservoir did strong work, running home fast. A pair of Cujk. horses in Midnight Sun and Goldfinder traversed a mile and a-quarter in 2.25. The half-mile was run in 56 2-ss, the six furlongs in I.2C__nd the first round in 2.7 2-5. Goldfinde--.-—hich had the worst of the weights, but w_s on the inside, finished a couple of lengths in frontAfter breakfast, Marconi beat Bonikoff over five furlongs In LlO. Decorate easily beat Miss Motion over four furlongs in 545. the latter taking 56 2-ss. A similar journey was covered by Overtime and Glad Tidings, the former having a length the best of it, in 535. Apellon, with the assistance of Makura over the last four, galloped six furlongs in 1.20 4-5, finishing the fast work on this track. THE TAX. Goldsize was the first to disturb the taa. running a round in 1.52 1-5, Watchchain taking L 54 3-5 for the same journey. Santa Rosa, with the assistance of Advocate over the last mile, moved nicely over a mile in L 52, finishing well. The Cup horse Bobrikoff strode rouna freely at a good three-quarter pace, and was not against the watch. Wee Olga. after cantering a round, galloped a ronnd in 1.54. Sedition easily beat Monoplane over a round ia L 56 3-5. Monoplane walked away lame, and her Cup prospects do not look very bright. Labonr Day and Koran worked separately, each doing light tasks. After breakfast. St. Lumsden easily beat j Surplus over a round in 1.5S 1-5. Ueyboy j alone running the same journey in 1.57 2-5. j Miss Winsome alone covered a round at half pace, and then ran home seven furlongs in 1.42. I Manuwera galloped seven furlongs m 140. j Miss Ada and Sphinx jumped off together for a round, Blnemount. which started in front, waiting for the pair and finishing with Miss Ada In 1.36 3-5, Sphinx being beaten off and taking 2min. Hunakaha and Tui Cakobau did strong work. Aristocrat ran seven furlongs, the last sts in 1-24 2-5. Mary Ann finish—l the work on this track, running sis furlongs In L 26. THE _A>**D. The Celt was the first te> use the sand, running a round in 2.8, without belajj on . a time-making mission, j K.i ka ma was restricted to good three- . quarter pace work. j Jolie Fille easily beat Vestal over six , furlongs in 1.10; Prince ilerriwee. which , was to have joined in over the last four, , j)umping off well ln front and holding his advantage throughout. First Walriki strode out freely over seven furlongs in 1.34. After breakfast Bluestone. Miss Livonia, and Fnss covered a conple of rounds at half-pace, spurting home the last three furlongs in 41 2-ss. .Bluestone finishing a couple of lengths in front. Master Walriki was a -couple of lengths . (too good for Sr_ Lewis over six furlongs in L2O. Vie spurted four-furlongs in 52 l-ss. , THE GBA.&S. THE JUMP-—— Pyrmont and Seaman covere— a ronnd of the hurdles, the former finishing in front, but bo_ took risks with, tiie fences. Brineiale did a similar task, striking one or two hurdles. Ring reached Ellerslie last evening with Domino, Potoa, Taketunra, Monocle, and the two-year-old Unity, by Lupin—Modesty. THE STIPEND—UiY STEWARDS. Private advice received in Auckland states that Mr. McMahon, the recentlyappointed stipendiary steward to the N.Z. , Racing Conference, is to arrive in Auckland on the 24th inst. The A_R.C. meeting will probably be the first that the paid official will officiate at. ——
