THE PAHI FATALITY.

INQUEST ADJOURNED. DUFAUR STILL MISSING. Tbe inquest concerning the death of Mr. S. H. Savers was formally opened yesterday and after evidence of identification had been given, warn adjourned, at the request of the police, for a week. Further particulars in •anneetion with the fatality indicate that the two" men rode over from Paparoa to Pahi on Saturday afternoon, arriving there at about 4 o'clock. They left on tbe return journey at 8.45. Dufaur was. a particularly good horseman, but Sayers was.:;only learning to ride, and was warned by a Mr. Skelton that he should avoid; fast riding. A few minutes after their departure from the hotel the galloping of horses was heard along the road leading towards Paparoa. It was hot until Sunday morning, about 7 o'clock, that it became known that an accident had happened. The body of Sayers was then found by Air. Skelton, lying on the side of the road. Sayers* neck was broken, and his sweater was torn open at the front, indicating the possibility of someone having examined the body. At 9.45 on Saturday night Dufaur was seen by Mr. Chadwick sitting on some timber with his hat pulled over his eyes. The fact that his keys were found near by on the wharf is the only reason for assuming that he committed suicide by jumping into the water. The river has been dragged, and at low tide a close search was made, but no sign of the missing man was found. It is hoped that it will transpire that as a result of the shock received the young man- temporarily became mentally unbalanced, and wandered away across country. All hi 9 books at the bank are in good order, and there is nothing to indicate any other reason for strangeness of action on Dufaur's part. Both men were perfectly sober when they left the Pahi Hotel. The late Mr. Sayers was only 33 years of age. A particularly sad leature of the affair is that he was expecting his wife and two young children to come out from the Old Country to join him, and it is understood that they are now on their way to New' Zealand. A Masonic funeral was accorded deceased. The Rev. G; A. Rickaby officiated, and delivered an earnest and sympathetic address. Bro. Robt. McCarroll conducted the Masonic portion of the service
