The tunnelling was done ' from ■ both • ends. There is one bend in the tunnel and: only on© air shaft in its whole length, the distance between it md the Wellington Street shaft being 3'iOOOit. The depth of the tumrel 'below ground varies ifrom 70ft to 175 ft, and in tho 6,7*5 ft inspected has a rise of rft lOin. Although some of tbe excavation work is still in' itihe rough, the trimming aend -coij«reL-_g operations are well -in band. It is a curious ifuct that this section contains some of the best and some of .tihe worst .ground met .with. -At one spot -the excavations had' evidently interrupted the-course of an undcwgTound spring, and in this vicinity it had been found necessary to-erect beams-end cross-heads.-Some ft—?., and -three-quarter miles af4ie*ding out. oi a total of nine miles from Orakci to Cox's have now been completed.
