FERRIES CONTROL

DISCUSSION ON HARBOUR BOARDS ] BILL. '. i The question of the control of the larbour ferries service was further dismissed at a conference of the Devonport, ii Birkenhead and Northcote Borough < Councils, held in the Chamber of Com- i nerce last evening. Mr. W. Handley, i tlayor of Devonport, presided, and there 1 vere present several representatives j rom the three local bodies. i The chairman moved the following re- t oluition which had been carried by the < Jevonport Borough Council: —"Notice laving been given by the Auckland H»r- , .our Board of its intention to introduce j nto Parliament during this session a ] ocal biU, having, among others, the fol- j owing objects: To empower the Board -| o establish ferry services between any j ermini within or partly within the port 4 if Auckland, and to purchase or hire j teamers or other vessels for that pur- ( lose, and to fix the fares, regulate the ervices, and make by-laws regulating i he traffic, this combined meeting, re- j resenting the Councils of Devonport. , lirkenhead and Northcote, do most em- . liatically protest against the Auckland ' larbour Board being empowered to . stablif.h ferry services, etc., seeing that he powers of the Municipal Corporaions Act, 1908, empowering local authoities to establish and maintain ferries E rould be practically abrogated and would . Iso deprive interested municipal bodies f the legislative powers which are al- .' eady vested in them." Mr. F. M. King (Birkenhead) moved, i s an amendment: "That this combined leeting of Devonport, Birkenhead and forthcote. Borough Councils, offers no bjection to the objects sought by the i iuckland Harbour Board in regard to" i erry services, providing that the inter- < sts of the boroughs of Devonport, Birk- 1 nhead and Northcote are not affected, j hould these bodies wish at any time j 0 municipalise the ferry sernees either j eparately or jointly." ( Mr. Arthur Greenslade (Northcote) in econding tho motion, .said he was of pinion thnt the Board would not inter- ; ere with the present arrangements so j t mg ns the company kept in touch with J lie residents on tbe north side. Nothing, t owever should be done to prevent the i Irmrd aiding less favoured localities in J i heir development by tbe establishment 1 i ferry services. ' , After further discussion the amend-' < it>nt was carried without dissent, and it j 1 ,-as resolved to forward copies to the 11 linister, the Jjocal Pills Committee, Bne j members of Parliament, the Harbour t loard, and the various other local bodies ' iitsj ested. | '
