STREET PAVING.

(To the Editor.) ' Sir, — With reference to "Pa-dor's" _ reply .to my letter, permit mc to again point out that it- is necessary to sand : the level streets - every day to prevent ' -he horses from slipping, and for further proof that it is dangerous for any of the ' streets, and more so for the hilly ones, I may mention that some few years ago the Bury Corporation spent £20,000 on paving a practically level street with granite setts, and after a lapse of about two years they took up the setts and repaved the "street with Lonkey setts, on account of the disastrous results and the compensation they were continually paying out in claims for accidents. This, 1 think, is good proof and dearly bought experience, and something which we, as a community, ought to benefit by. Whilst " Pavior" acknowledges the superiority of the Lonkey sett over the granite sett, why not adopt them altogether, and so save any further probable expense? With regard to the flag industry, I would like to point out to him that there are a-i many flags leave Britannia and Sha%<*forth every year for the London trade alone as Brighouse send out of their quarries for ali over the country. There nre more stone flags used at Home now than ever fiere were, although there are some concrete flap's and asphalte used, too, but nothing in comparison to the flag trade, and if he had travelled arm. done business in the quarries of both Lancashire and Yorkshire, as I have had to do, he would soon find out whether the stone flag trade was on the decline. — I am, etc., HERBERT S. NICHOLL, 24, Tutanekai Road, Richmond.
