DISORDERLY STUDENTS.

PUNISHMENT RECONSIDERED. AMPLE APOLOGY REQUIRED. Considerable time was spent by the CTniversity College Council yesterday afternoon in discussing in committee the question of the disorderly proceedings at the capping-day ceremony. Prof. Egerton was liuard on behalf of the Professorial Board, which has recommended to the Senate that there should be no ceremony next year as a mark of disapproval of the conduct this year. On the motion of Mr Peacock it was resolved: "That in view of the explanation and apology contained in the letter from the Students' Association to the College Council in connection with the interruptions which took place during the recent capping ceremony, this council suggests to the Professorial 1 Board a reconsideration of the question, with a view to a possible withdrawal of their recommendations to tlie University Council (that the public presentation of degrees be abandoned for one year). Further, that the council, in suggesting this course, is prepared to support the Professorial Board in obtaining from the Students' Association an unqualified expression of regret for tlio recent disturbance, and whatever guarantees the board considers necessary to prevent a recurrence of such unseemly interruptions on any future occasion." Tn reply to the letter of explanation from the Students' Association, the council decided to forward a copy of the following resolution, which was adopted, on the motinii of Mr Beatty: "That the council accepts the expression of regret on beluilf of the Students' Association for the disturbance at the capping ceremony, nnd recommends the association to approach the Professorial Board, tenderin;; an ample apology for the disorder referred tn. and offering to provide sufficient guarantee against a repetition of unseemly conduct on future occasions."
