PROPOSED NEW WHARF
FOR COAL AND TIMBER. EASFWIAiRD OF ftIAJLIWAY WHAEF. The provision of a special coal and timber wharf was made the stfbject of a ■report at fch-e request of the Hartwur ■Board to-day by the Traffic Manager (Mr. E. W. Burgess). I "The best position for a wharf for coal, timber, and other bulk cargo," the TeporL proceeded, "is eastward of the present Railway wharf, this being near the railway goods station and yard. The ■wharf should be wide enough to provide for at 'least three lin-es of rails on each side, with a central roadway of 40ft., dnJ should 'be able to berth two and two moderate-sized vessels." The report contained a suggestion for a shed of, say, 40ft. in width. In the matter of a the writer thought that the only other one available was the position of the proposed central wharf, Quay Street. This would, however, tend to concentrate too much railway traffic in the street, an-d spoil that jetty for u-so as a passenger wharf, for which purpose it should be kept when built.
