STRUGGLE WITH A BURGLAR.

I SENSATIONAL ENCOtnTTEK. SEVERAL SHOTS FIRED. THIEF BEATEN UNCONSCIOUS. MELBOURNE, August 21. Mr. Geoffrey Syiue, one of the proprietors of the "Age" newspaper, had a sensational encounter with a burglar last night. Mr. Syme was awakened by a man in hi« bedroom, carrying an electric lamp. The intruder presented a revolver, but Mr. Syme grappled with him, and a fierce struggle ensued. The burglar fired several shots, one of which grazed Mr. Syme's arm. During the struggle Mr. Syme and the burglar rolled down the stairs locked together. Mr. Syme secured the burglar's Browning revolver and battered his head with it till he was unconscious. When the police arrived he was removed to the gaol hospital. The beads of both men were severely cut in the fall. One of Mr. Syme's toenails was torn off, and one of his fingers was bitten almost through. He also bled extensively from the wounds in his chest.
