HARBOUR BOARD SETS UP A COMMITTEE.

Tile advantages of getting Auckland made a port, of call in the San FranciscoSydney service were pointed out at the meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday by Mr. Bagley, who moved in tlie direction of setting up a committee jto consider what inducement could be offered to get the Oceanic Steamship Company to make Auckland a port of call in the recently renewed service between San Francisco and Sydney. Mr. Bagley said the service would be of great value to the Dominion. The company's contract time would allow them to call at New Zealand providing sufficient inducement could be offered. Mr. Virtue, who seconded tho motto*, said it would be very good to have the service, but he could not see what the Board could do. Mr. Kntrican said that all the Board could do would be to allow the boats to come into Auckland free of dues. The right way to go about the matter or getting the service back again would bo Ito get tbe Auckland members of Parliament to bring pressure on the GovernI ment to make it worth the Company's while to call at Auckland. Even if the ; boats only called when going one way, j it would be a great thing. j The -chairman said the matter was one j for the Chamber of Commerce, and was outside the province of the Board. Mr. Bagley deprecated any member opposing a motion that was meant for the best interests of the Dominion.

The chairman pointed out that it was not correct. The point was that the Board could do nothing in the way suggested. It was the form of the motion that was objected to. Mr. EntTrean then moved, and it was ; agreed, that a committee bo set up -with (he object of impressing on the Auckland members of Parliament the advisability of getting the Government to induce the Oceanic Company to make Auckland a port of call.
