NEW ZEALAND CLOTHING FACTORY

PREMISES TN QUEEN STREET-

In spite of the by no means email accommodation afforded by the present premises in Queen Street, and the erection e>f additional premises in Karangahape Itoad. Messrs. ll.allcnstein Bros, arc contemplating still further extensions, and to I his end have instructed Messrs. Mahoney and Son to prepare plans of a new building, tenders for which will bo called in a few days. Specifications show- that the building will bo oi six storeys without u basement. It will occupy the. combined Biu>s of Uie present shop and the next two down the street, the first of which is at present occupied by Mr It. C. Hawkins, bookseller, and the other by a firm conducting jewellery auction sales. Only one shop intervenes between this site and that of the new A-M.P. buildings, which are shortly to lie eroded. Thc six floors will be built with a frontage of ")3ft- by a depth of 9.ft. Th? New Zealand Clothing Factory will occupy only the ground floor in the forra of one fine largo shop. A novel feature will be the provision- made for an extraordinarily large window display. Fainter the footpath will be fev.ir isolated glass eases or window spaces separate 1 by three entrance pas-sage's. Behind them is a passage about five feet wide, with show cases at each end, and across this are the real shop windows arranged in the ordinary manner. The shop, which has two entrances, consists of one room with a, depth of Toft. Behind it is the packing-room, entered from a lane off Lome Street. There is also a ladies' •boot room, a strong room, and an oflice. A goods lift will be instilled. The upper floors will be partitioned in duplicate into offices, there being eight on each floor with three strong rooms, and :-Jl up-to-date conveniences. They will be reached by either stairway or elevator, the entrance on the groundfloor being at the right hand side of th? shop. The building will present the imposing appearance expected of a block facing the main street of New Zealand's largest city. The front, wall will be of ferroconcrete, anel will have two bays extending from the second to the fourth floor. The greater part of the side walls will also be of reinforced ferro-concroto. as will the stairway up to the first floor. The floors and probably the partitions will be of wood. PONSONBY CATHOLIC SCHOOL. Tenders arc being called by Messrs! Mahoney and Son, architects, for the : erection of a Catholic School on Vermont Street, Ponsonby. The school is to b.- i one-storey brick building. 80ft. by 80ft.. : with hollow walls. 11 will bo of very simple dr_ijru, having three clas^-rooms 25ft. by 25ft. on each side of tho centre hall, which is 70ft. by 2.1ft., and could also lie divided up into at least two classroom* if required. There is no residential provision, the only additional rooms being a. teachers' room and a play-shed at the back.
