EMIGRATION OF DOMESTICS.
THE PROPOSED APPIIEXTTCESHJT. V* (From Our Special Correspondent.) , ■ LONDON , , June 21. following on the report written by our lady correspondent of the meeting held in London in March last to propound B. scheme for emigrating domestics to ,> T ew Zealand on an apprenticeship basis similar to that adopted in the cxse of t(wn lads under the Sedjrwick scheme, several applications fox domestic servants nave been received at our London offices. It is impossible there, of course, to deal witn the subject, and the letters •were forwarded to .Mr Sedgwick, just on .the eve of his departure with a batch of town boys for Ontario. Asked as to the progress of the scheme, •Mr Sedjrwick has replied as follows: — "I have read with great interest the able arti-cie on the extension of the Government apprenticeship for boys and girls which appeared in various New Zealand journals. This has resulted in my receiving a number of inquiries from ladies who appear to be unconscious that the Government of >~e\v Zealand have not yet extended the scheme to the gentler sex. Until that is done no one here will send out girls of too tender an age, owing , to the absence of sufficient guarantee of supervision and good homes. It is the fear of the unknown and often non-existent danjrers which -.veigh so heaviiy with untravelled English vrorr.en. If the Government would under■take to apprentice 200 girls for at least three year* to good homes, with the contingent basking of wages.
