BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held last i evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr W Wallace) and Crs. F. Finch, Thos. Church, .T. Maginness, F. M. King, J. P. MePhalL J. 11. Court, A. G. Bartlett, C E. Campbell, and E. Shepherd. Municipal Conference—The secretary of the Municipal Association wrote statin? that the annual conference will taie place in Wellington on July 29. The letter was received, the Mayor (Mr Wallace) having been appointed the Council's representative to the conference. Victoria Road.—A petition was read from Messrs A. G. Jarrltt and others asking that the portion of the Victoria Boad, Barkdale, leading down to the wharf, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, should be cleared of ti-tree. and made passable for traffic It was decided to -clear the road as requested, and to intimate that the Council are considering the question of spending more money on this road. Borough Office.—The Town Clerk announced that he would be taking up his pertnanent office to the district from July 1. Carting.—The Mayor inthnated that the sub-committee had purchased a new dray at a cost of £24, and also a horse for the second team, tor the borough purposes. The sab-committee's action was endorsed. HJU.S. New Zealand.—The Secretary o-f the Nary Xieague wrote asking the enpport of the Council in bringing under the notice ■of the residents ■the proposal to present H-Sl.s. New Zealand with a white ensign. It was resolved to reprjr that, wWlst approving of the application, the Conncil would ask >what would be the probable cost of the flag, the amount required from each district, and in the event of a surplus how do they propose to spend it? (Baden-Powell Boad.—A petition was presented from 65 ratepayers, asking that access be made from Baden-Powell Boad to connect with the B±ckdale Boad. Or. Bartlett and the Mayor were deputed to looJfc Into the matter, and report toithe next meetIng of the Council.
