RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION

FORMED AT REMUEBA. "TO LEAD THE BOARD." There was a small but representative gathering of -Kemuera residents at St. Aidan's Hall last night, when a meeting was held for the purpose of forming a Ratepayers' Association. Mr. F. Short, who had called the meeting, explained that he had the names "of about sixty people who had expressed their willingness to join the association. He said that it would be necessary to appoint a chairman, and he moved that Mr. Dempsey take the position. Mr. E. Bond: Does this include the Greenlane Association? Mr. Short: S T ot at present. Mr- Bond: Is it defunct? Mr. Short: Certainly not; it may join this association later. Mr. Dempsey declined to accept the chairmanship, and on Mr. Bond's motion Mr. J. H. Hannan was. appointed. Mr. Hannan then took charge of the meeting. He stated that the position would be a difficult one to fill, but that he had always been a bit of a fighter, and was determined to do his best. It must be the object of the association to lead the Board. In the first place, he thought that members of the Board should not take part in the meetings of the association. "Where do I come in?" asked Mr. Bond. Mr. Hannan said that he would move that in the event of a member of the association being" elected to the Road Board, he should retire automaticallyThe motion was carried without dissent. Mr. Bond: Do I have to go? I think that it is desirable that the members of - the Board should bo admitted as members. I would be quite willing to give you valuable information in connection with matters in the district. Mr. Hannan: There is no objection to your remaining, but I cannot allow you to talk. Mr. Bond thereupon relapsed into a moody silence, and the business proceeded -uninterrupted. Mr. F. Short was appointed secretary, and on the motion of Mr. C. A. Cawk■wcll, Mr. A- V. Burcher was elected vke-bresident. Mr. Cawkwell moved that a committee be formed to investigate and report to the association on the desirability of the district being converted into a borough, or of becoming a -ward to Auckland city. The following committee was appointed, with power to add : —Messrs. Spritt, Dempsey. Clayton, Moore-Jones, Short, and C'awkwell. .It was decided that the association meet on the first Tuesday of each month, and that the Road Board be asked to place its office at the disposal of the : ratepayers on that evening. The following notices of motion >vere read by the chairman for Mr. Whitney: (1) That this meeting of ratepayers strongly objects to the Board roading the Lucerue Estate, and urges + he Board to hand back all monies received from the owners of the estate, and requests them to do the work themselves according to the by-laws compiled by the order of the Board. (2) That this meeting of ratepayers views seriously the contemplated discharge of sewage "into the Orakei Creek , for two years or untik such time as the Auckland Drama™" Board's sewc.r a.nd outfall at Okahu Point is completed, and that ibis- meeting strongly urges thp Board to have the Orakei'Creek deepened to loft, and widened to 100 ft from the sewer to deep water in the harbour.
