The home for animals, erected by the Canteribury 'branch, of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was formally opened this afternoon. The home is designed for the. accommodation of paying patients as well as temporarily lost or ill-treated animals, such as dogs, cats, and so on. It will be a hospita.l also, where surgical cases can be dealt with "under up-to-da-fce conditions. FLAIMXILIj WORKERS. PALMERSTOX NORTH, this day. A deputation representing the Flaxmill Workers' Union waited on the New Zealand Flasmillers' Association executive to lay before it, a resolution carried at a special meeting o'i the union, pom-t----ing out that the present system of paddocking by piecework was inequitable in regard to wages paid and earned. By the present system one individual or more obtained the work, and employed one or two more men to assist Mm by day wages. These men performed equal "work to the man who took the piece contract, yet he made from twenty to ■twenty-five shillings per day while he paid his assistants nine to ten shillings per a&y. The deputation asked that not lees than two men share in the piecework for each stripper running, -with epeci&l provisions for every mill where more than two strippers are running. Mr. Broad (acting president of the Plaxmillers , Association) said the association would carefully consider the matter, and let them know. He emphasised the excellent relations which existed between tbe millers and the Workers' Association, and said that they had met them regarding cutting, and were only too pleased t6 consider anything they brought before them.
