OPENING OF PANAMA CANAL. EJTECT ON THE CAHAJDZA-f-AHSTBALIAN LINTS. VANCOUVER, June 11. According to one of its officials the Canadian-Australian Royal Mail line v cea se to exist aft?r the completion af 'the Panama Canal, the idea being to substitute a cargo service. ■flic Union line, it is stated, will inaugurate a mail line to New Zealand and Britain, via Panama, which will be subsidised by the Governments of both counts. Vancouver will be dropped, and yjll be served by only the Canadianpacific vessels, transhipping at Colon. Colour is lent to the statement by the f ai r. that the Union line is building cereral freighters, which are being fitted fnr the carriage of frozen produce. It is believed that'these vessels will inaugurate the cargo service between New Zealand, Australia. Victoria (8.C.1 and Vancouver, and take the place of the present steamers. A fast line will run between New Zealand and Great Britain by way of Panania.and will carry mails, passengers, and freight for Vancouver and Victoria. The t_ats will call at Colon and connect with a special Canadian-Pacific service. Tne idea is to arrange the schedules to the advantage of the ships of both lines in order to provide an increased mail and passenger service.
