BLAZE AT HAWERA.
HOTEL, AND SHOP DESTROYED. IXMATES SAVE NOTHING. (By Teiegraph.— Press Association.) HAWERA, Sunday. A destructive fire occurred at Hawera at five o'clock this iuornm* T . resulting- in the complete destruction of t.he Central Hotel, of which Mr. Barclay Harrington is licensee, and Mr. 1). Barry owner, and of Mc-d'ruer, Bone, and Co.'s draperyjpre mises. owned by Mrs. Momssey. The tire originated in the hotel, and when discovered had a pood hold. The brigade was considerably handicapped by the poor water supply, while a strong westerly wind was blowing. The fire quickly envelope 1 the building, -and spread to tile drapery shop, which was on the '>ppo>ite corner of Ilifrh a.nd I'nion streets. The brigade concentrated its efforts on Miiiruer's building, but was unable to check the fire, nnd the shop was burned to the ground. Nothing was saved from either building, and the inmates of the hotel escaped in their night attire.
Mt-liruer and Co.'s stock was insured for £3000 in the New Zealand office, and was value;! at £8000. Their build ins was covered to £800 in the South British, but was valuer: at £2000. The Tiotel premises were insured for £1750 in the New Zealand and £1000 in the London and Lancashire office. Their value is put at over £3000. The licensee had £2.i0 insurance on his stock, -which was worth £500. and £750 on the furniture, valued at £1000. all in the Alliance office.
