THE LUST OF HATE.

GREAT WAR SERIAL.

We have been especially fortunate in securing an unusually dramatic and brilliant serial to follow on the popular "The Marriage of Kettle." It is the latest work of

AT,AX H. BTTRGOYNE. author of '"The War Inevitable," '-Trafalgar Re-fought., etc., who is M.l', for North Kensington, His travels have been world-wide, and he is acquainted in specially intimate fashion with the Far East. Few writers can lay claim to having toured Manchuria on foot, and during the Russo-Japanese war, in 1903, he went through the unpleasant experience of being arrested at Port Arthur on a false charge of espionage, so that a similar incident in his latest book is literally true to life. Mr. Burgoyne is an acknowledged expert in naval matters, and is the author of the standard work on submarine navigation. With a view to allowing our readers lo gain some idea of the scope and possibilities of " THE EXIST OF HATE,' we publish the following DESCRIPTIVE SYNOPSIS— At a well-known hotel in Portsmouth, frequented by naval'men, a dispute takes place between some officers and a German, on the subject of Britain's attitude ill relation to the expected war between Holland and Denmark. Among the company are Lieutenant John Martin ana his chum Foster, who is engaged to Martin's sister Hazel. The two men, returning home by motor car. are fired upon after having railed at a lonely cottage on the way to deliver a package of letters to their late antagonist, the German yon Holbach. Their chauffeur is killed, and after hours of delay they arrive at Martin's house only to find that Hazel has gone hastily off with Captain yon Holbach. who has come with a plausible tale of her brother and lover hurt in a motor accident. The young men sent a deep laid plot, and their attempt to track Hazel and Iwr abductor takes them to Germany, and plunges them into th? thick of the war which has now broken out. Vividly the story shows how Germany soon meets England hand to hand, and the two officers play a part in all the exciting scenes of the war, many of whicu take place on English ground. Hazel's lover, equal to and emergency, never doubting his ultimate success, is as good a type of the British naval officer as is Martin, whose love story, though | quite as full of interest, runs a much calmer course. One adventure succeeds another, and the story goes full speed ahead to a triumphant conclusion. Opening chapters, MEXT SATURDAY, MAY 4. ' ~
