SOLICITING ALMS.
At the Police Court this afternoon, Ernest Hill, who was represented by Mr. Singer, pleaded siilty to a charge of soliciting alms in a public place, namely, Queen-street. Mr. Singer explained that the man had come down from the country recently with a cheque for £BO, of which bis mother now had £25. He had been convicted of drunkenness and indecency on February 28, and was under the influence of drink when the present offence was committed- The SubInspector explained that the man was "one of those silly people who will come to Auckland to knock down cheques." He had accosted seven or eight men in Queen-street before he was arrested On promising to leave town to-night Hill | was ordered to come up for sentence when called oa» and to pajr cost*, 8/.
