A man who was killed by a tram car in Willis-street, Wellington, on February 20, has been almost definitely identified as Henry Calvin, who passed through Westport from Greymouth on February 27 fe, tk « Arahura for Wellington hound for Wanganui races. An extraordinary sequel to the robbery from the Corporation strong-room in September last of twtween £SOO and £6OO is reported. Some time ago a small paxeel of stolen money was found hidden away amongst old records in the strongroom, and this morning two workmen discovered the remainder of the missing money planted under the Corporation office amongst lumber. The police are still without any clue as to the perpetrator of the burglary. FIRE AT rNVERCARGILL, IXVERCaRGELL, this day. Fire -occurred at midnight in the premiaee of VV. £. Butcher, tailor, which were gutted. The fire spread to tbe roof of some adjoining shops in which stocks were considerably damaged by smoke and water. The following are the insurances on stocks:—Butcher, £550 in the New Zealand and £450 in the South British; Rankin, jeweller, £9OO in the South British and £9OO in the Victoria; Holmes, bootmaker. 4700 in the Neve. Gilchrist, chemist, £3OO in the Victoria £350 in Commercial Union, £IOO in the Alliance, The outtding insurances are: —£l2oo in the Norwich Union and £6OO in the Guardian It is estimated it will cost £7OO to repair the buildings, and the loss on stocks will be heavy.

The Prime Minister left for Auckland by the Main Tronic railway to-day. On Monday afternoon, at Waihi, he will turn the first sod of the railway extension towards Taoranga; on Tuesday afternoon he will visit Xgaruawahia and perform a similar ceremony in connection with the branch railway from the Waipa Ooflierie* to the main line- He is due back in Wellington en Weanesday.
